American is Hard To See: Reflection and Discussion on American Arts and Culture

Prospective Symposia Series

American Studies Center, Sichuan University

Fall 2015

  1. The Golden Age of American Television

Dating from the approximate change of the millennium American television has experienced a kind of Renaissance in terms of its production of television series that have captivated the American imagination in their piercing exploration of 21st century American psyche and reinventing fundamental themes from American cultural history.  Among the most charged of these includes; “The Wire” (2002), “Madmen” (2007), “Breaking Bad” (2008).

This discussion will predicate on participants view a sample of each series with DVD to be provided by myself.

Time: , 7:00-8:30 pm, 2015-11-5

Venue: Room 207, College of Foreign Languages and Cultures

2. “Colleges, Primaries and SuperPacs”: The American Electoral Process

In November of 2016 Americans will elect the 44th president of the United States.  At present both political parties (The Republican’s and the Democrats) are running their prospective “primaries”: the process by which each party nominates its one preferred candidate for president.

This discussion will offer introduction to the American political process but give close attention to recent changes in the American electoral system with emphasis on how SuperPacs (enormous financial donors), the media, and “jury-mandering” (the process of creating electoral districts) have fundamental changed American politics.

Time: , 7:00-8:30 pm, 2015-11-19

Venue: Room 207, College of Foreign Languages and Cultures

3. The American University

This discussion will focus on Higher Education in America: a process, which, to outsiders, is often steeped in mystery and confusion.  Based on a brief introduction to the history of American higher education this discussion hope to explain many of the oddities or curiosities of the American university: including; What is the true value of an Ivy League education in today’s America?  Why over the last eight years has the American government allocated tremendous resources (billions of US dollars) to public junior colleges in America – colleges that offer very little in way of prestige?  Why at many public American universities is the Football or Basketball coach the highest paid employee not just at the university, but, in the entire state (yes, really!)?

Time: , 7:00-8:30 pm, 2015-12-3

Venue: Room 207, College of Foreign Languages and Cultures

 4. Introduction to Digital Humanities

Dating from approximately the year 2000 Digital Humanities (or, DH) has become a (many would claim “the”) dominant discourse in American humanities.  Indeed, many would argue that Digital Humanities is among the singular research method in the United States that continues to provide credibility and funding for many humanities scholars and in fact departments and research laboratories.  Familiarity with DH has become a strong requisite for admission to graduate humanities studies in American.

This discussion will provide an introduction to Digital Humanities with specific reference to texts and scholars who remain among dominant voices in the field: Franco Moretti (Stanford University), Matthew Kirschenbaum (University of Maryland) etc.  Such introduction will serve as basis for examining a selection of the most influential and current DH projects.

Time: , 7:00-8:30 pm, 2015-12-17

Venue: Room 207, College of Foreign Languages and Cultures

5. "Making American Culture": American Arts and Literature 1930 – 1960

Time: , 7:00-8:30 pm, 2015-12-30

Venue: Room 207, College of Foreign Languages and Cultures
