American Studies Seminar

Spring 2016

This term we will focus on a chronologic discussion of the “American Century” and pay close attention trans-disciplinary approach to studying the “American Character.”  In addition to our focus on literary themes we will also consider the evolution of American music, art and film.   Our study will divide into five discussions each centering on specific decade.

  1. Gatsby, Jazz and Prohibition: The 1920s

What are the origins of the “Jazz Age.”  Why did the culture of this decade give rise to so many defining expressions of American culture: Louis Armstrong, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Earnest Hemingway and Charles Lindbergh.

Artists: Louis Armstrong, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Earnest Hemingway and the Harlem Renaissance.

Time: 7 pm, April 20

Venue: 207, College of Foreign Languages and Cultures

  1. Depression and Revolution: The 1930s

The collapse of the American economy in 1929 brought the “Roaring 20’s” to a dramatic end.  Arts in America experienced a profound shift from celebrations of the Jazz age to discussion of political interests and were deeply shaped by the Workers’ Progress Administration.

Carson McCullers, William Faulkner, Hollywood and the WPA

Time: 7 pm, May 4

Venue: 207, College of Foreign Languages and Cultures

  1. World at War and a Nation Re-Defined: The 1940s

With the world at war and with the unimaginable horrors of Nazism exposed American art turned towards explorations of the darker elements of human nature while at the same time the origins of a post-war economy, mass-consumerism, and suburbanization were slowly taking shape.

Langston Hughes and Kurt Vonnegut

Time: 7 pm, May 18

Venue: 207, College of Foreign Languages and Cultures

  1. Conformity Anxiety and the origins of “The American Way”: The 1950s

Beneath the veneer of perfection, harmony and stability American’s wrestled with the emotional anxiety of the nuclear age and the rigorous conformity post-war culture assumed.  This was a decade of profound conflict between exterior image (mass media) and deep internal struggle.

Artists: John Cheever, Jack Kerouac, Jackson Pollock, Sylvia Plath,

Anne Sexton and Andy Warhol

Time: 7 pm, June 1

Venue: 207, College of Foreign Languages and Cultures

5)        “The American Way” Questioned: The 1960s

Civil Rights and the questioning of American authority.  What are the origins of “Hippie Culture”?  Why did the 1960s see so many revolutionary protests ranging from African Americans, to Women to the LGTB community?

Artists:  Truman Capote and Norman Mailer

Time: 7 pm, June 15

Venue: 207, College of Foreign Languages and Cultures
